RESONANCE

ℐ𝓃𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓁𝓁𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓸𝓃

In the natural world, hermit crabs seek refuge in the abandoned shells of deceased mollusks or other hard exoskeletons to protect their soft abdomens, using these shells to withstand ocean currents and abrasive sediments. They breathe through paired pores and sustain rhythmic cycles of opening and closing for respiration and locomotion. This biological mechanism illustrates a coupling between perception and defense, in which physiological rhythm functions both as an adaptive protective strategy and as a dynamic response to environmental fluctuation.
Within the context of the installation, the “shell” is extended as a symbolic structure of shelter, simulating how external systems provide temporary frameworks of protection for fragile bodies. Such protection is not enclosed but porous. Through the interaction of sound and movement, participants sense one another’s presence, exposing their own vulnerability through resonance. The acoustic resonance thus reveals a form of interdependence, in which cooperation, synchrony, and perceptual feedback guide individuals into a shared state of exposure within protection.
